the PARTHENOCISSUS project
Parthenocissus vines, traditionally grown on buildings and walls, are inexpensive but powerful tools for urban cooling. They are beautiful and colorful and they benefit air and water quality. They return a bounty of benefits for tiny costs in care and maintenance. This project's mission is to encourage Parthenocissus plantings on buildings and walls for urban and global cooling, to gather data on their performance, and to share information about these useful plants.

Polish transportation officials have been studying the suitability of various vines for use on sound barrier walls. Sound barrier walls are used far more often in Europe than in the US. A "right to quiet" is recognized in Europe. Whereas, in the US, visual appeal according to local culture tends to trump noise as an issue except when the largest freeways pass through high-income areas.
They give highest marks to Virginia Creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia (P5) and Boston Ivy, Parthenocissus tricuspidata (P3).
